Since the 1 Trillion Trees Campaign was announced, leading scientists have warned that planting some areas can cause more harm than good. Why not focus on degraded forests instead?

The environmental benefits of new planting

We agree that sites must be chosen carefully to ensure that any planting scheme is worthwhile. Our partners evaluate the soil, ecosystem, water supply and other factors before approving an application. Many planting schemes restore deforested areas by boosting fertility and resilience to flooding or drought.

Funding of new trees also comes with the education and technical support essential for effective and sustainable planting, including management of the water table. Follow-up surveys and monitoring show high survival rates for trees funded by Sustainably Run. They also confirm that our approach works – for the benefit of the local and global environment, people’s diets, and their standard of living.
